AIS Reprogramming
The AIS continuously transmits the vessel’s details and in doing so can be identified by other vessels and VTS stations. When a vessel changes its port of Registry or name, re-programming of the AIS is a must to allow for vessel’s new details to be transmitted. Medcomms Ltd. Is able to perform re-programming of AIS equipment of various manufacturers.

EPIRB 5 Yearly SBM
The EPIRB in its primary role as an emergency location device can be thrown into the sea to assist in Search and Rescue, and will activate automatically once it touches the water. The device is designed to be waterproof up to a depth of 4 – 6mts and subsequently EPIRBs are required to be verified for water integrity at five year intervals, or on replacement of its lithium battery, whichever comes first. To allow for battery replacement it is necessary to remove the battery from its housing and in doing so all seals have to be replaced and the EPIRB then tested for water tightness. This specific test is performed within a special housings that will prevent any un-intended transmissions. This test has a maximum validity of 5 years as per MSC/Circ. 1039 of IMO Regulations. Medcomms Ltd. Is certified to carry out the above tests and is authorized to issue the relevant test report and its Shore Base Maintenance Certificate.

EPIRB Annual Test and Certification
The EPIRB is a very important Search and Rescue locating device. Once in the water it will start transmitting the vessel’s details. Some models have a GPS incorporated into the unit, so in addition to sending vessel’s details, it will also transmit the vessel’s exact position. IMO regulation MSC/Circ.1040 states that EPIRBs have to be tested for their transmission frequency, programmed data and markings every 12 months. Medcomms Ltd. have the necessary equipment and trained technicians who are approved to carry out the required tests and issue the relevant certificate.

SARTs can be tested against any X-Band Radar. However, this is a more complete test. Using a dedicated SART Tester, various measurements are carried out. In each test, the upper and lower frequencies are measured combined with its radiated power, number of sweeps and duration of each sweep. The SART is also checked as to wheather it responds to Radar transmissions. A test certificate is issued for each test.

VDR APT/COC
Vessels over 3000 GRT, are obliged to carry a VDR (Voyage Data Recorder). The VDR is the “black recording box” designed for the maritime industry, similar to the ones used in aircraft. This equipment will continuously record important data, such as the vessel’s position, time, heading, speed, radar image and AIS targets. It will also record voice communication from a VHF and other bridge audio, additional data can also be recorded depending on the ship’s particular characteristics. A primary manufacturer of VDR equipment is FURUNO. Medcomms Ltd. have trained personnel and required test equipment to carry out the Annual performance test (APT) on FURUNO VDR equipment and are authorized to issue the conformance certificate (COC). Medcomms Ltd. is approved by BV and RMRS to carry out the above service.
